Public Speaking - 10-Minute Informative Speech on Making a...

Informative speech – Demonstration How to make a pizza dough I know you had a chance to eat it. I’m even confident you had a chance at least once to arrange the toppings on one for yourself. But how about making an entire pizza right from the scratch? Yes, that includes the pizza dough - the very soul of every pizza! Now, how can I motivate you to consider this instruction of making a pizza dough as something you may actually put to use sometimes? I know this doesn’t really fit nicely into a standard picture of American way of life, especially because of the time it takes. But if you want to make a difference and impress that special someone, you better go an extra mile. Trust me, it will give you some bragging rights†¦show more content†¦No, no, no †¦ Like you don’t go to the gym three days before you hit the beach. Remember, you’re doing something special here, and if it doesn’t take time and patience and a pinch of love (which I forgot to mention in a recipe) then it’s not really special, is it? OK, after letting it be for 10 minutes, the yeast mixture has matured and is now ready to be added to the flour. Sip it very slowly as you mix it gently. You can stir with your fingers assuming you washed your hands, of course. Now you can add salt and Olio Olivo Extra Virgine. Little by little, the mix will be turning from sticky to a nice fresh dough. If it seems too dry, add a bit more water. If you feel it’s too watery, add more flour. When all the mass from the mixing bowl is now one compact mass, take it out and place it onto a clean tabletop surface – it’s time to kneed! Oh yeah, don’t be shy now, even the big boys do it. You can close your window if you feel your pride is in danger, but you’ll get the last laugh anyway. To prevent the dough from sticking, sprinkle some flour over the surface and start kneeding with a lower palm of your stronger hand. Press it, fold over, then press again and do that for about 7-8 minutes. You know you’re done when the dough becomes compact and gummy to some extent. If you press your finger on it, you should see it coming back a little. Shape it now into a

Campus Rape And Sexual Abuse - 1573 Words

Sean Mutlu IGE 220.06 Prof. Gwen D’Arcangelis 6 November 2014 Campus Rape For most students fresh out of high school, college provides a fresh new experience free of the restrictions present while living under your parents roof. Life on a college campus provides not only the means to develop intellectual skills that are necessary to join the workforce but also the means to become a fully functioning independent member of society. Many social traditions are common on all college campuses and one that often gets explored is sexual culture and the exploration of such. Sadly what seems to be becoming a trend in most schools, from the most scholarly and prestigious universities like Harvard, to community colleges is a trend of rape and sexual abuse of men on women. Campus rape is the rape of a student attending an institute of higher learning such as a college or university. This term puts emphasis on the campus where these institutions are, but are not necessarily confined to those boundaries. College campuses host a large concentration of women th at have a much higher risk of rape or other sexual assault that women in the general population or in a comparable age group. During the past two decades a concern for the victimization of college women has been escalated, and this is mostly due to the fact that the concern for victimized women has grown in general; victimization that previously received little to no attention is finally being recognized. Parable of the Sadhu Analysis from three general Essay Example For Students

Parable of the Sadhu: Analysis from three general Essay approaches. The Parable of the Sadhu presents a complex situation which action immediate action was necessary. Sadhu, an Indian holy man, was discoverednaked and barely alive by a group of multicultural mountaineers during their journey. Each ethnic group did a little to help the Sadhu, but none assumed full responsibility. Their priority was in climbing the mountainrather than carrying Sadhu to the village where other people could helphim. Although the conditions of the trip were so that once the mountaineerswent down to the village they might not have been able to come back up, theauthor of this essay still feels guilty for what was not done for the Sadhu (Donaldson 280). There are three general approaches in examining a moral issue and making a decision, those being consequentialism, deontology andvirtue ethics. The essay does not clearly indicate which method was used toassess the situation. In my opinion, the best method would be Kantiandeontology. Let us discuss consequentialism first. Consequentialism focuses on consequences as the most important factor in the decision making process(Donaldson 3). For consequentialists the motives of an act are not asimportant as what comes out of it. Utilitarianism is one of the branches ofconsequentialism. Utilitarianism believes in the greatest good for the number (Donaldson 3). This method along with egoist consequentialism wasprobably the one that was used subconsciously by the mountaineers. Leaving the Sadhu was fine because in the end the greater amount of people would have reached their goal and that would have made them happy. Egoistconsequentialists who believe that the greatest good is their own would have done the same, satisfying their desires before helping someone else (Donaldson 4). This method, however, is not the best for this situation. One proving factor is that McCoy still feels guilty about this incident. Therefore, this method did not produce the most ethical response. Virtue ethics, unlike consequentialism, focus on the kind of person eachone of us should be. They focus on cultivating certain characteristics and look at every situation in terms of its potential influence on the moraleof the person (Donaldson 10). This method, although much more helpful than utilitarianism, still produces an unclear response. On one hand, kindnessand compassion are both virtues that would be cultivated if themountaineers decided to help the Sadhu and carry him to the village. On theother hand, if mountaineers continue their journey virtues such as courage and determination would flourish. It is difficult to decide which virtuesare more important than others and therefore, this method is too ambiguousto be applied to this situation. Finally, there is deontology, also called non-consequentialism. Deontology,in general, focuses on the motives of the act and the concept ofduty(Camenisch 2). Kantian deontology assesses that there is aCategorical Imperative the highest moral principle that should govern allhuman actions. This universal law is stated in two ways: 1) act in a way that one would act with anyone in the same situation, andso that one does not create an undesirable world and 2) interact withpeople as human beings with rights and dignity rather than means to an end (Camenisch 2). This moral principle would be the most fair and useful in the Sadhu situation. McCoys friend mentions in the essay that themountaineers would have probably acted differently if the Sadhu were amember of their ethnic group (Donaldson 281). If they used the Kantiandeontology method, its first statement would forbid them from treatingSadhu differently than they would treat any other person in this situation. .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .postImageUrl , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:hover , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:visited , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:active { border:0!important; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:active , .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71 .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u13e29ef551322aada8e36e37bfb7cc71:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: In Poems The Man He Killed, Reconciliation, an EssayAlso, if for a second the mountaineers considered that they would becreating a world in which they would not want their children to live, theywould have acted differently. By creating this world I mean that they would not want people to act this way to themselves or their descendants. And finally, if they were treating Sadhu as a worthy human being, theywould have understood that human life is more valuable than accomplishing agoal. In this case, they would carry the Sadhu to the village and make sure that he is taken care of. One could assume that I find the Kantian deontology method best justbecause that is what I think I would use. This, however, is not completely true. Much of this argument is based on the fact that McCoy still regretsthe way he acted with the Sadhu. Based on this, I assume that if he were inthe same situation again he would help Sadhu more. Kantian deontology seemsto be the most obvious method that would produce this decision. Personally, I think that all of the methods are too indefinite and therefore none ofthem can be said to be the method for decision making in every type of situation. The question then is how does one know which method should beused? Copyright 1999 2004 OPPapers.com

Contibution vs status among women in the world war essays

Contibution vs status among women in the world war essays Has the status of women in Canada matched their contribution to the Canadian society? While the men where off in Germany the women had to do all of the mens jobs. After a while the women were aloud to enlist in the war. After the war many women had lost all of the accomplishments that they had gotten through out the war. Have women got the gratitude that they deserved through out the war and their contribution to Canada. During WWI and WWII many women had to fill in on jobs that were considered for men. Most women were being paid less and almost always had men for bosses. Although it was still there, the social division between men and women was slowly disappearing. Women were doing an extremely good job filling in on mens jobs. Through out WWII women were starting to be aloud to enlist in the military and other jobs of those types. Most all of the women that were enlisted in CWAAF, CWAC and WRCNS were ignored until the solder shortage. Through out the wars many of the trades grew for the women of Canada. In May 1944 CWAC was finally aloud to go to war for Canada. There was much triumph for the women solders of Canada. Although their were many triumphs through out the two wars, there were also many set backs for Canadian women after the wars. Most Canadian women were expected to just quite their jobs and go back to womens work. The equality barrier that had kept Canadian women from Working had come rushing back. After the wars many were fired from their jobs to make room for the male veterans that came back from the war. After the Two wars there were many setbacks for all women in Canada. Essay Sample on Hypothesis Testing My Educational Experience in the US and Saudi Arabia

Essay Sample on Hypothesis Testing My Educational Experience in the US and Saudi Arabia The first hypothesis states that there would be a strong correlation between the years of residency of students in the US and how uncomfortable Saudi students who are working in the classroom with an opposite gender and how uncomfortable the Saudi students working in pairs or small groups with students of the opposite gender. It was tested using the quantitative survey where the students were to answer questions. An example of such as the number 11 question that my ESL teacher in the US encourage contrasting opinions and points of view more than my Saudi teacher and #14 that required the students to comment on whether their ESL teachers in the United States encouraged more verbal responses from the students the their Saudi counterparts. Following the analysis on the available studies on the subject through the belief held by the literature, ESL teachers based in the US encouraged verbal communication to and with the students. On the other hand it was different in Saudi Arabia where the classroom lessons were not student-focussed as it was teacher-focused and the objectives were memorization of the language. The hypothesis was also designed to test US ESL are far better versed in student-focussed pedagogies than their Saudi counterparts. the formulated hypothesis was proven to be true that the majority of the participants said that the teachers from the US encouraged verbal communication by emphasizing on participation more than the Saudi counterparts. Generally more than half of the participants agreed with this statement. The second hypothesis stated there would be a strong correlation between English teachers in the US do a better job of meeting my specific language needs than do the Saudi English teachers. the other hypothesis states Saudi students ESL teachers in the US use much wider range of materials in class than Saudi ESL English teachers. Also question # 13 stated Saudi ESL teachers in the US encourage the students to out additional information on topics from the library, internet and many other sources more than the Saudi ESL teachers. The second hypothesis was tested using cumulative survey by questionnaires. The question #16 focused on obtaining information in regard to uncomfortable working in the classroom with an instructor from the opposite gender The questionnaire also asked the students to respond to #17 which stated that uncomfortable working in pairs or small groups with students of the opposite gender. There results indicate that there is a balance between those who supported that students are ok with different sex teachers in the classroom and those that were against this claim. To the students learning English as their second language from Saudi Arabia the gender of the teacher is important. The female Saudi were found to be gender selective but not male counterparts. The third hypothesis stated that There would be a strong correlation between the Saudi student overall education experience in the US if it has been similar to the education experience in Saudi Arabia and the other question in the questionnaire stated the learning environment in the US is much less structured than in Saudi classroom (#18). This was vested using the quantitative survey. Hypothesis stated that My ESL teacher in the US use a much wider range of materials in class than my teacher. the other read English teachers in the US used visual aids and other real objects to help make connections with the language more than in Saudi English teachers (#19). The finding was that this is partially true. The opinions are polarized between those that believe that the teachers use teaching aids and those that do not. By use of the hypothesis it helps correct some of the beliefs. For instance in the questionnaire #6 stated that my overall educational experience here in the United States has been very similar to my education in Saudi Arabia. Hence by use of this hypothesis there are conclusions that can be made.

Leadership, Team Building and Communication Case Study

Leadership, Team Building and Communication - Case Study Example Though such examples are always amongst the academic courses such as strategic management or marketing or entrepreneurship, where examples of Costa and Dunkin Donuts, etc are given, but not when it comes to leadership, team building and communication. This assignment specifically discusses a caf and discusses the said concepts about the same. The owners of the caf are Rose Gray and Ruth Rodgers. Prior to predicting the leadership styles that are adopted by the owners of the caf, it is critically important to discuss and analyze the prevailing environment at the caf, for which, some critical points are quoted below from the extract. In the initial portion of the article, the author clearly states there was a clear indication about the caf being a step ahead of the conventional cafes with a family like atmosphere, a spirit of community, with mutual care and support amongst people. Respect for all is the key term that has been identified as the differentiating factors, whereby respect is for all, including the chefs, the waiters, dishwashers, everyone. Respect comes from within, from the culture, ultimately yielded in the top-bottom approach, and not possible otherwise. Other than this, there are no hierarchies, every person is free to take up a job that they discover and realize that they can do it. Following the same, there are no rigid job descriptions and there flexibility to switch roles within the arena. There is appreciation of creativity and provision of self audit, with responsibilities of actions taken by the person in-charge. Despite there being more freedom and lesser control, there is absolutely no t olerance for bad service due to a bad mood, though these are also individuals and there can always be a bad day, because a good food is no guarantee of bringing the customer back but a bad service would definitely not bring him back. Equality and mutual support are the major fundamentals; the daily menu is decided by the chefs and then moved up, which shows a classical example of a bottom-up approach. The seniors are influential but in an effective and unfelt manner, with no explicit push. The key rule is: 'involve everyone equally' which defines the strategy followed by the owners. There are no uniforms like any other traditional caf, which illustrates the openness of expression and empowerment. Following these evidences, as depicted above from the analytics of the case, it is clearly visible that the leadership style adopted is participative or democratic. The clear motto of such a group is 'let us', and this is precisely how it all proceeds; as the case suggests, there is no bossing around nor there is any delegation of tasks that might be the case in autocratic or delegative style of leadership respectively. For identifying the emotional intelligence competencies used in this assignment, reference is made to the Goleman's five dimensions of emotional intelligence. Goleman identifies two fundamental categories and then the dimensions respectively i.e.: Personal Competency Self awareness Self regulation Motivation Social Competency Empathy Social work As it is wisely said that the changes that are effective, come from the topic, along the similar lines, a brief analysis of the case and as visible from the readings quoted in the previous section, it is clearly vi

Economics Assignment, The Market for Rhodium Essay

Economics Assignment, The Market for Rhodium - Essay Example Now if the prices remained same of palladium and rhodium, the demand for rhodium might increase at higher ratio than palladium because of the difference in the prices. Due to low demand of palladium, its price was decreased by the company which increased its demand. Due to increased demand for palladium, the demand for rhodium has fallen to large extent in the auto catalyst use. Because the demand for antipollution chemical has aroused only in the auto catalyst industry while the consumption of rhodium and palladium by other industries remained same. Now when the price of rhodium has fallen there is a big difference in the demand for rhodium in auto catalyst industry as compared to other industries. As auto catalyst is the major consuming unit of antipollution chemicals so demand has fallen for rhodium particularly in it due to increase in demand for palladium. Hence the trend of demand for rhodium has fallen. In the above diagram, DD is demand curve for year 2001 with demand 557 and price 1829.79 approx. D^D^ is the demand curve for year 2000 having average price of 2025.47 and demand 809. The difference between total demand has caused the price to move also. Ans.: The demand for rhodium as compared to palladium reduces in resulting of cross price elasticity. It shows that the price of palladium has been reduced by the company to reduce the pollution in the car exhausts. The greater demand of antipollution chemicals in the society enforces the company to reduce the price of palladium in order to increase its demand as compared to rhodium. The company decreases the price of palladium which greatly affects the demand and price of rhodium. Because of decreased prices of palladium, the demand for rhodium has also decreased which ultimately causes its price to be decreased. Hence due to the decrease in the price of palladium the price for rhodium has also decreased. Subsidization of industries can play an

Approaches to Decision Making Essay Example for Free

Approaches to Decision Making Essay There are two common ways to make decisions regarding changes in an organization, especially when others are involved in the end result. The two ways would be to make decisions individually, making the decision by yourself or by creating a committee, getting others involved in the process. Knowing that something needs to change, means that there has been a problem identified, evaluating alternatives and then selecting the solution. Depending on the problem and the criteria that will be evaluated in making the final decision, this will play an important factor on whether individually making the decision is better than a group decision. When making decisions and changes that are going to effect many, it typically is better to make group decisions. For larger companies, it is typical that a committee or a team would be created. Bringing together individuals of the organization that would be effected by these changes. Having a committee involved in the decision brings more views, thoughts, past experiences and suggestions to the table to be evaluated for optimal solutions. Advantages of a group decision is there are more options contributed, the better chances that decisions made would be accepted by those involved in the decision as well. â€Å"Quantities and diversity of information are greatest when group members represent different specialities†. (Robbins, DeCenzo, Coulter, 2011, p. 71). Finding a suitable solution is half of the battle, the next half would be implementation. By having a group decision enforced, will increase the success of changes since they were a part of it and will encourage change. In the example provided about budgetary concerns, it would be suggested that a committee be created with upper management from finance, human resources, and department managers to discuss how overhead such as employees, supplies and other capital costs are effecting our business. Before having the initial meeting it would be suggested for each manager to evaluate their department and be ready to give suggestion of where they would be able to make individual changes without sacrificing the well being of the patients care. Once all contributions are made from each department, hearing the options of solutions would allow the committee members to discuss the  changes and place value on which options could be most beneficial. Options like reducing employee head count or hours, re-evaluating vendors where supplies are purchased from, eliminating overtime costs by having back up staff available or changing processes by reducing paper trails and going electronic. Each of these will need to be analyzed on immediate consequences or benefits and what the longer term effects will be. The disadvantage of working with a committee is that there will prolong the process of making a decision, more meetings, more time and there could be more resistant from individuals that will need to be â€Å"talked into† this decision. In the example about making budget cuts, one could make the decision alone and not consult with any other departments. The individual making decisions to cut staff, supplies or capital costs would need to have a comprehensive understanding of all costs associated with the organization and what implications could be by reducing budgets. Even though it is just one person making the decision, it is very important to still do a thorough evaluation of what the problems are, evaluate multiple solutions and weigh the benefits or consequences of these changes. It would be very important to obtaining financial monthly statements/costs that are associated with each department. The benefit of making decisions solely is that multiple meetings would be eliminated, do not need to â€Å"sell† your idea or solution to others, and a decision could be made quicker which will save time and money for the organization. The disadvantages of making a decision like this where it effects a group, out weigh the benefits. You do not have access to others input and past experiences who have dealt with similar situations or hearing what concerns your management will have. By not including others, you have a higher chance of the decision not being welcomed by all and having resistant to the change and implementation. References: Robbins, S., DeCenzo, D., Coulter, M. Airline Safety :: Free Essay Writer

Airline Safety What Should the Regulations be Regarding Airline Safety? Introduction It was early in the morning, warm & sunny. We had the day off from school for some reason, but I can't remember why. I was riding my bike in the street with my friend, Mike, about 4 blocks from my home in the North Park area of San Diego when I heard a faint blast, looked up and saw a jetliner falling out of the sky on fire. I can't remember thinking anything except "It's going to hit my house". Then I realized there were probably a lot of people on the plane, and was immediately so scared I began to cry. Then I didn't hear anything until the plane hit the ground. Watching that plane on impact is a sensation I hope I never have to relive again. The aircraft was diving at a steep angle and one wing was on fire, with flames shooting everywhere. I remember the plane disappearing behind some tall trees and then feeling the ground shake like an earthquake, and the deafening roar of the impact and following explosion. It was an absolute nightmare. It seemed like the entire neighborhoo d was on fire. The TV stations & news reporters were converging on the scene in what seemed like only a matter of minutes, but must've been at least half an hour. I think I just stood there talking to people for the longest time, but I don't remember anything they said. There were only distant sirens. In a short period of time the police and several residents had blocked off the streets to traffic, and I remember hearing people screaming in the background, and others yelling to get help. I also remember the trees being on fire and this incredible column of black smoke rising into the clear air, and the smell of jet fuel burning. All these people - some Firefighters, some Police Officers, and some ordinary people - were carrying injured people and passengers into the private school across the street. I didn't know then, but some of them were dead. I remember how weird it was that the freeway traffic was completely stopped on I-805, which was only a block from the impact site, and it was eerily quiet except for the distant chaos. My friend Mike disappeared. I found out he was okay, but he had gotten scared.

Sir Walter Raleigh?

Disease Prevention Measures among African Americans Living in the United States Essay

My research explores race-based medicine. Specifically, my research will focus on what preventative measures are available for African American women living in the United States. Among minorities African American women have a higher number of health disparities; psychological and disease oriented. What percentages of minorities take advantage of preventative medicine? What percentage of African Americans are aware of resources made available to them? The growing number of obesity related diseases among African American women has increased more than 23% from 2010 (Nickens, H.W., 2006). Failure to use preventative measures has sparked much concern surrounding the implications and scientific evidence of race-based medicine. Race-based medicine focuses on the current system of public health services because now more than ever. Due to the increasing number of deaths within the African American community there is an expectation from the larger medical community on how to improve medical services that will work more efficiently for African American women. The concern about preventative measures among minority groups focuses on three things; 1) that it meets the needs of the individual, 2) that the service will be free at point of delivery and 3) that once service is received the individual will continue to utilize the service which will increase preventative measures for African American women. Preventative measures of obesity related diseases for African American women are lacking in several areas. Awareness about health systems and services offered are sometimes misinterpreted and therefore discourages African American women to utilize health information and facilities offered to the general public. This essay is on Toni Morrisons Beloved It is an essay on the literary devices used in the novel.

This essay is on Toni Morrisons Beloved It is an essay on the literary devices used in the novel. Toni Morrison's unique and distinctive style helps control how the reader will respond to the characters and events within the novel. Morrison uses several different devices to control how the reader reacts to everything that is happening. Some examples of these devices are syntax (as tied with the stream of consciousness method of narration), point of view, and the use of flashback technique. The first device that Morrison uses within the novel is syntax with stream of consciousness narration. In the second part of the book, one of the chapters contains no punctuation. This method of writing is better known as stream of consciousness. In this chapter Sethe is the narrator and the reader is reading her thoughts. Personally, I found this method very effective because I could follow Sethe's thought patterns and understand what she was thinking. Another example of effective syntax is in the third part of the book, the last chapter, "This (It) is (was) not a story to pass on."Toni Morriso n, on jacket of her Pulitzer Prize win...(pg 274-5) This particular quote was separated into its own paragraph which brought out the importance of this statement. It showed how Morrison wanted to stress that the people who came into contact with Beloved could not remember her, and even the people who loved her eventually forgot her too. "They forgot her like a bad dream... those that saw her on the porch deliberately forgot her... It took longer for those who had ... fallen in love with her... in the end, they forgot her too." (pg 274) Morrison effectively shows the reader with that single sentence in its own paragraph that Beloved seemed almost like a bad dream, and nobody could or wanted to remember anything about her.The next device used within the novel is point of view. Morrison effectively changes...

Organizational Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Organizational Analysis - Essay Example How ICT has been beneficial and harmful to organizations has been addressed in this essay along with a discussion of how worker community is getting impacted and suggestive measures to improvise upon the use of strategic ICT in organizations. Before proceeding onto describing the positives and negatives of ICT, it is imperative to first understand its meaning. In general parlance, information and communication technologies assist in the processing and management of information and data on large scale. Applying it specifically to business scenarios reveal unique aspects of ICT in the domains of decision making, support systems, office automations, networking and electronic forms of interaction between employees of an organization (Andriessen & Koopman 1996, p.321). Thus, ICT in organizations started as a facilitating and cost saving tool but now has assumed the role of a strategic business partner where competencies and resources are being derived from the use of ICT. In this light, the emergence of Web 2.0 is the biggest achievement of ICT worldwide minimizing distance between boundaries and making the world round. Data converted into digital form can be stored in large amounts on systems and computers which makes storage easy and portable to organizations. Traditionally, information saved in black and white used to get distorted by various means and no evidences were available when needed. By storing data and information in electronic format, anyone can have access to it 24*7 and limitations of distance, time and speed have been done away with by use of ICTs in organizations. This is the prime supporter behind online businesses and bank and other monetary transactions operating in real time. Concepts of video conferencing and other modes of interaction are saving both time and cost for companies. Availability of information 24*7 has made organizations more

Taking Business Abroad Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Taking Business Abroad - Essay Example , between 2012 and 2013, seen basically flat sales (221M in 2013 and 222M in 2014), which is a problem for achieving growth for this High Street firm. The company was, however, able to raise its net income from  £3.1 million to  £5.3 million between 2013 and 2014 as a result of reduced selling, general and administrative costs in its operational model (Bloomberg). In 2011 and 2012, the company reported no profitability. Thornton’s, as a High Street company, provides gourmet chocolate products under a premium pricing structure to cater to the higher resource consumer in the United Kingdom. It is positioned in its market against quality, attempting to build a premium brand identity to gain interest from its more affluent target customer segments. The firm’s recent advertising strategies included The Art of the Chocolatier and Chocolate Heaven since 1911 as a means of using traditionalism and quality/sophistication to gain interest in markets that lean toward premium products. Fortunately, Thornton’s does not operate in a highly saturated competitive environment, competing against such brands as Cadbury which are not targeted at the high resource consumer. After 103 years of operations, Thornton’s has managed to create a brand that stands out among lower cost, less quality chocolate products and has a reputation for superiority with many UK consumers. Thornton’s, with flat sales volumes, requires a strategy to achieve growth in a market where consumption levels are not growing sufficiently. In the UK, Thornton’s is in its maturity stage which makes it difficult to achieve revenue growth without altering its existing business model and seeking new markets. This report identifies opportunities for Thornton’s PLC to enter the Chinese market as a means of enhancing sales growth and improving the financial position of the firm. The company’s most significant competitor is Cadbury, a company that produces chocolate products targeted at mass markets, but

Website Evaluation Essay Example for Free

Website Evaluation Essay The creator of the website http://www. nationalmssociety. org/index. aspx is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). NMSS was started in order to provide research and resources to those living with multiple sclerosis. Their philosophy is to create a movement inclusive of people with multiple sclerosis in an effort to move toward a world free of multiple sclerosis (NMSS, 2008). NMSS is a credible organization that has been in existence for many years. Since its creation, NMSS has been diligently working towards developing new research to find a cure for multiple sclerosis as well as enabling people with this disease to find quality of life. Proof of NMSS credibility is shown in the constant updating of the website. News releases are posted regularly to update visitors about new progress being made. Additionally, the website includes up to date information about where those living with multiple sclerosis can find services to help them. Finally, NMSS can be considered credible because they include the sources of their information in their news releases. In their multimedia library section of the website they offer additional resources and information about these is provided (NMSS, 2008). The main stated goal of NMSS is to enable those with multiple sclerosis to find quality of life and to continue to work towards a cure. In order to accomplish these two goals, NMSS is committed to excellent service, leadership and teamwork. These noble goals are listed on the website under the core values section and provide visitors with important information about their mission. Unstated goals include details about the importance of research as it is assumed that most people would agree this is important. There doesn’t appear to be any biases or hidden agendas since NMSS isn’t in existence to make money. Instead, they are dedicated to finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and helping people live with the disease. The information presented on the website is useful to students living with multiple sclerosis. The resources provided can give students important tools to enable them to be successful in school despite the presence of a debilitating disease. The content of the website is current as news related to multiple sclerosis is updated often. This information is based on scholarly research so it can be considered accurate. In addition, the resources presented to viewers are based on studies done by experts in the field so it can also be considered accurate. Additionally, the resources available to viewers are appropriate as it includes people of all ages, races, genders and ethnicities. Multiple sclerosis doesn’t discriminate and neither does this website. These resources are presented in an easy to understand way. There is a link on the website to the multimedia library where viewers can research books, journal articles and pod casts. There is also a link to news where viewers can read the latest news about multiple sclerosis as well as search previous news stories. These important issues are presented through additional resources and news stories in a realistic manner that allows all types of viewers easy access to help materials (NMSS, 2008). The website is presented in English but can be translated into Spanish as well. While this doesn’t enable other languages to read the website it does include a large number of additional Spanish speaking viewers access to important information about how to live with multiple sclerosis. To this end, the readability of the website is appropriate for all viewers regardless of language. The links are easy to find and the website is easy to navigate in order to find what one is looking for. The content included is organized among these links in order to make it simple to find necessary information. If a viewer is looking for the latest news they can visit the news link or if they are interested in finding local services they can visit the find a chapter link (NMSS, 2008). The home page is welcoming because it is organized and a viewer can quickly find necessary links. It includes a slideshow of the latest news with encouraging pictures of people living with multiple sclerosis. These scrolling news stories are meant to motivate viewers to find out more about NMSS, either for themselves or for others. It also includes easy to find links for joining the NMSS movement as well as resources for those newly diagnosed, those currently living with the disease as well as information for friends and family of those living with multiple sclerosis. These links motivate all people touched by multiple sclerosis to learn more about finding a cure and creating high quality of life for those living with this disease. To this end, the links are well organized and easy to find and navigate. There are enough links that desired information is easy to find. Finally, NMSS includes a search link to increase the ability of viewers to find what they are looking for (NMSS, 2008). The graphics on the home page are included with the latest news stories so they can be considered accurate. The website doesn’t rely on many graphic but the ones they include are relevant to the different topics being discussed on the different pages. There are many links designed to motivate people to get involved and learn more about NMSS, including stories of those suffering from the disease, â€Å"Walk for MS,† â€Å"Bike for MS† and an MS fact of the day. These activities are designed to provide additional information that can contribute to quality of life as well as educate people about finding a cure (NMSS, 2008). This website is easy to use for anyone, including disabled people. NMSS doesn’t pity those suffering from multiple sclerosis. The entire mission of NMSS is to help people with the disease live a normal life. It is sensitive to the different needs of people with multiple sclerosis but it certainly doesn’t portray any type of pity. In fact, it works to promote independence and dignity for those living with the disease. It offers a wide variety of resources designed to show those with multiple sclerosis how to live normal lives. Different experiences from different people living with the disease are included in the Online Community. This is a place to post and read individual and personal stories of other people living with multiple sclerosis. These real life examples show others how similar these people really are. Individuals with multiple sclerosis can live relatively normal lives for many years before the disease progresses to the point of disabling a person. If a person with multiple sclerosis didn’t tell others that he or she had the disease it would remain a secret, often for a very long time. In this way, people with multiple sclerosis are very similar to everyone else. The education sections of the website provide further information to show students how similar people with multiple sclerosis are but also to educate them about the differences and what they mean (NMSS, 2008). One suggestion for the website would be to increase the personal stories included. There are only a few posted currently and offering more real life experiences would further the motivation of people living with multiple sclerosis. Additional learning activities geared specifically towards students would go a long way towards helping people understand multiple sclerosis and how it affects friends and family members. The current layout is very easy to navigate so change wouldn’t be necessary. In fact, adding more links would contribute to more confusion while navigating the site. There is so much information currently available on the website and it is condensed into a few links so that viewers don’t have to spend so much time trying to find what they are looking for. Additional links are included in each major link to further narrow the focus of a search. This type of layout makes information easily accessible. A final suggestion would be to include translation into more languages as NMSS promotes diversity and providing important information to more people would only further their mission towards finding a cure. Lazzaro Spallanzani :: essays research papers

Lazzaro Spallanzani Lazzaro Spallanzai, was the Italian physiologist who was one of the founders of experimental biology. Born in Scandiano, a small town in the providence of Emilia on Jan. 12, 1729 , Spallanzani was among the many dedicated philosophersof the eighteeth century (Lazzaro...1). His main scientific interests were biological and was a master at mircoscopy, but he also looked into problems of physics, chemistry, geology, and meteorology, and volcanology (Gillispie,1). After attending a local school, Spallazani went at afe fifteen to a Jesuit seminary in Reggio Emilia where he dominated in rhetoric, philosophy, and languages. He left Reggio Emilia in 1749 to study jurisprudence at the ancient University of Bologna, where he expanded is education in mathematics, chemistry, natural history, and aquired a knowledge of French (Asimov,1). For three years he worked toward his docterine in law. In 1753 or 1754 he became a doctor of philosophy. Then, he recieved instructions in metaphysics and theology and took minor orders. Within a few years he became a priest and added himself to two congregations in Modena (Gillispie,2). Spallanzani, in hundreds of experiments tested various rituals for rendering infusions permanently barren and finally found that they remained free of microorganisms when put into flasks that were sealed and the contents boiled for one hour (Lazzaro...1).The entrance of air into the flask through a slight crack in its neck was Patel 2 followed infusoria. He reported no spontaneous generation in strongly heated infusions protected from aerial contamination. In 1765, after cutting up thousands of earthworms and exploiting the ability of the aquatic salamander to regrow its tail, he resolved to investigate reproductive phenomena in animals ans plants(Gillispie,3). He proved this by cuting theworms the area that affected the segmental regenerative response. Amputation of the tailwas followed by vascularization of the transparent growing stump. He also established the general law that in susceptible species inverse ratio obtains between the regenerativecapacity and age of the animal. Lazzaro launched countless experiments relating to infusion animalcules and "spermatic worms," with result that soon made chimera of thevegetatice force and undermined the docterine of organic molecules; but these ideasdemanded more attention so they were postponed (Asimove,2). He also found that complex infusoriaare more susceptible to heat and cold than the "infinitely minute" germ of lower class, whose relative resistance he ascribed to their eggs. In 1777 he publicly demonstrated the great force exerted by the gizzards of fowls and ducks in

Contrasts in the Great Gatsby

Tyler Simms Great Gatsby Essay Accelerated English 11 Mrs. Cameron F. Scott Fitzgerald constructed his novel, The Great Gatsby, by sculpting numerous situation and character contrasts together through out the novel to create and deliver a magnificent work of art. Although Fitzgerald contrasted numerous characters and situations through out the novel, there are three that are very pungent; the characters Tom Buchanan and George Wilson and Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson. Not only were there Character contrasts, there were also situations that Fitzgerald contrasted against each other. One of them was the contrasting of the concept of the Old Money life style and the New Money life style. Tom and George not only have physical contrast, they also have contrasting lifestyles as well. Among other things, Daisy is very statuesque and â€Å"up-in-the-air† where as Myrtle s pragmatic and â€Å"down-to-earth. † Fitzgerald uses the concept of Old and New Money to contrast lifestyles and characters in the novel. Tom is Old Money, which means he inherited all of his riches from at least two generations into his family and does not flaunt his money. George, on the other hand, is very low class and has to work to provide for himself and his wife, Myrtle, who is committing an affair with Tom. Aside from the money aspect, Tom is â€Å"†¦ a sturdy, straw haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner† (Fitzgerald 11). It is also made clear by Fitzgerald that Tom beats his wife and Myrtle, giving him the element of being robust and controlling. George is a pushover from the time he is introduced until he makes a decision that ruins everything for some, and revised for others. Tom deceived George into believing that he is going to sell him a car, with no intention of doing so, but with every intension of seeing Myrtle. Not only is he a pushover, he is very gaunt with not even half the audacity of Tom. Tom's audacity and ill temper hurt the people around him, particularly Daisy and Myrtle. Their personalities are very much apart from each other. Myrtle is a very forward-looking person who knows {text:soft-page-break} what she wants in life, she is endowed with a strong character and vitality which distinguishes her from Daisy. Daisy's superficiality extends to her personality. She is fragile, unstable and a confused character. While talking to Nick she said: â€Å"†¦ I woke up with an abandoned felling and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. ‘Alright,' I said, ‘I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool† (Fitzgerald 21). They also married their husbands for different reasons. Myrtle says she married George because she thought he was a gentleman. She also thought he knew about good â€Å"breeding. † On the other hand, Daisy married Tom because rich girls had to marry into money and good social status. Marrying Tom, Daisy married into the Old Money life style. The people who live by the Old Money lifestyle inherited all of their riches from at least two generations back in the family. They also don't flaunt their money with buying and having extravagant cars, houses, parties etc. Fitzgerald differentiates Old Money and New Money by placing them on separate sides of Manhattan. Old Money on East Egg and New Money on West Egg. Tom and Daisy live on East Egg and prefer small get-togethers. Tom and Daisy had a party and the only people who were invited were Nick and Jordan. Whereas Gatsby, who lives in West Egg and is New Money, has very extravagant parties every weekend. By seven o'clock the orchestra has arrived-no thin five piece affair but a whole pit of oboes and trombones ad saxophones and violas and cornets and piccolos and low and high drums† (Fitzgerald 44). The contrast of the two lifestyles along with the characters brings the novel to a whole new level of interest. It also makes the story more interesting. Any novel that contrast any two or more subjects from with in itself, such as two or more characters or different life styles, is indeed a work of art. {text:soft-page-break} Works Cited Page Fitzgerald, F. Water Refilling Station Business Guide Essay

One of the fast expanding business in Manila, and in most Metro cities nationwide, is the water refilling station. It’s mushrooming on every street corner, because a lot of people in urban areas prefer to get their drinking water from these water stations, it’s simply clean and safe to drink. Over the years, as the demand for cleaner water becomes higher, the price of household water purifiers and bottled water has become prohibitive. Water refilling stations managed by private entrepreneurs offer a cheaper and more convenient solution to the public’s drinking water needs than bottled water or the use of household filters. Water Refilling Station THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE Introduction Purified water is water from any source that is physically processed to remove its impurities. Distilled water and de-ionized water has been the most common forms of purified water. Water can also be purified by other processes like reverse osmosis, carbon filtration, microfiltration, ultra filtration, ultraviolet oxidation, electro dialysis and/or etc. Mineral water is water containing minerals or other dissolved substances that alter its taste or give it therapeutic value, generally obtained from a naturally occurring mineral spring or source. Dissolved substances in the water may include various salts and sulfur compounds. The more minerals in drinking water, the harder it is said to be; water with few minerals is described as being soft. Distilled water is water that has many of its impurities removed through distillation. Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container. A few years ago, there were only a few water refilling plants her e in Cagayan De Oro City. Those are of which are still famous to the public like Nature Spring and Wilkins. Wilkins was one of those who didn’t do a good job on capitalizing on their market superiority. Unlike Nature Spring who seems like un-formidable in the market today holding big investments in large companies. The Cagay-anons realized  the need for this necessity, entrepreneurs invested on it seeking to get a modest share of the market and looking for different kinds of cracks and niches in the market. This was the start of a very competitive and very aggressive marketing and business war, which one could relate to it as a never ending dog battle. As more people entered the market, the more competitive it has begun. Currently, according to the only jug supplier here in Cagayan De Oro, there are already more than 100 water refilling companies here in Cagayan De Oro alone. One of the early people who ventures in this great†¦ Basic Feasibility Study A. Capital Investment 1. Water Refilling Machine – P 250,000.00 2.
